About Hunting in Idaho

Idaho runs the entire range of an excess of small animals to extremely prized big game species. Generally they are structured to provide a wide variety of hunting experience with a strong emphasis on opportunity. There is a lot to learn in this state and getting outdoors, so be sure to be one of the first to get a license as there are many who eagerly await.

Navigating Deer Hunting in Idaho requires a combo, sports or hunting license with deer tags and a permit for the weapon you will be using. That is why below the seasons are listed by weapon, dates and the zones you should stay in for the animal you will be pursuing.

Idaho Hunting Seasons Offered

Big game: Deer, Elk, Pronghorn, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Gray Wolf, Moose, Bighorn Sheep & Mountain Sheep

Small game: Rabbit and Hare, Squirrel, Otter, Beaver, Fox, Bobcat, Coyote, Raccoon

Bird: Quail, Chukar and Grey Partridge, Grouse, Pheasant, Turkey

    State Highway 55 and Boydstun Street, then south on Boydstun Street to West Valley Road, then west and south along West
    Valley Road and West Mountain Road to Cabarton Road, then north on Cabarton Road to State Highway 55, then north on
    State Highway 55 to Farm-To-Market Road, then north on Farm-To-Market Road to Elo Road, then west on Elo Road to

Area Closure: That portion of Unit 39 within Ada County, and that portion of Unit 39 within the following boundary:Beginning at the intersection of State Highway 21 and the Middle Fork Boise River Road (Forest Road 268), east on Forest Road 268 to Cottonwood Creek-Thorn Creek Road (Forest Road 377), to South Fork of Thorn Creek to confluence of Thorn Creek, north and west on Thorn Creek to the confluence with Mores Creek, south and west along the center of Mores Creek including in the Mores Creek arm of Lucky Peak Reservoir to Highway 21 to the point of beginning is closed.
  6. That portion of Unit 53 west of U.S. Highway 93 and that portion of Unit 45 south of Interstate 84. Due to routing changes made to U.S. Highway 93, the eastern boundary for Unit 53 short range weapons hunt is: Beginning at the junction of U.S. Highway 93 and U.S. Highway 30 (east of Filer), north along Hwy 93 turning east at the junction of Poleline Road, continuing east to Blue Lakes Blvd, then north across the Perrine Bridge following U.S. Highway 93 to U.S. Highway 26 in Shoshone. The rest of Units 45 and 53 are controlled hunts only.

Note: These hunts overlap calendar years. Turkey tags expire on December 31 the year of purchase. Hunters must purchase a valid hunting license and turkey tag for the year in which they intend to hunt. Hunting licenses and tags go on sale December 1 for the upcoming year.

The Idaho Panhandle is home to over 300 wildlife species, there are large animals like caribou, grizzly bears, there are grasslands and forests which make up for half of the rangelands. Moose are once in a lifetime where hopefully research will help to track most animals.
